HS2 Notification: No weekend closure on 21 and 22 August, and changes to traffic rerouting around Northway Island from Monday 23 August to late October 2021

HS2 Notification: Changes to traffic rerouting around Northway Island from Monday 23 August to late October 2021

We are remodelling and improving sections of the existing road network in the area and creating new routes on HS2 land. These road improvements will ensure that when the future station is operational, the local road network is fit for purpose. Upon completion, a new T-junction will replace Northway Island. A new ‘longabout’ is already in operation outside the Holiday Inn Express NEC, on the way to the National Exhibition Centre (NEC).

We started the creation of the new T-junction in April 2021. To enable us to continue to connect parts of the existing road network to the new routes we create, we are carrying out a series of weekend road closures in 2021 near Northway Island.

On Tuesday 10 August , we informed you that possibly a temporary, weekend road closure would need to be installed along sections of the B4438 and A452 on Saturday 21 August and Sunday 22 August 2021. This weekend closure will no longer take place and our next weekend closure will take place in October 2021. We will confirm the details of these traffic measures in due course.

To continue to remodel and improve sections of the existing road network in the area, we will install some changes to the existing traffic rerouting around Northway Island which commenced on Monday 19 July .

From Monday 23 August to late October 2021, one of the short sections of Northway Island that was closed on Monday 19 July will reopen, whilst the other section remains closed. Depending on your direction of travel, you may be redirected from Northway Island, along the B4438, and back. You will still be able to access all routes and direction of travel along the B4438, A452 and Northway will be unaffected.

A new direction of travel around Northway Island will be installed following this phase of our programme. We’ll inform you of any changes to the direction of travel around Northway Island before they take effect.

On occasion, temporary, off-peak single lane closures will be installed between Monday 23 August and late October 2021 around the longabout, on the way to the NEC, and along short sections of the B4438.

You can view the works notification, including a map, here .

Please also note that no further news alerts will be sent from this site.

Radford Semele Parish Council’s outdoor gym project receives HS2 community funding

Radford Semele Parish Council has secured £30,000 from our Community and Environment Fund (CEF) to provide an outdoor gym for adults on the village playing field .

The grant was given to the council to create a facility for the whole community, with a range of exercise machines suitable for adults and youngsters over the age of 14 years.

The facility is aimed at encouraging more families to visit the playing field to improve their health and wellbeing and will be suitable for a wide range of users who want to exercise outdoors and keep fit. It will complement the popular children’s play areas nearby which were upgraded in 2016.

Once the equipment is in place the Parish Council will organise an open event to demonstrate the use of the machines and to provide guidance on fitness training for users.

    Community and Business Funds

The award has come from HS2’s Community and Environment fund (CEF), one of two funds with a combined total of £40million available to local communities and businesses that are demonstrably disrupted by the construction of Britain’s new high speed railway between London and the West Midlands.

Our Community and Business funds were launched in 2017 and have to date supported 25 projects in Warwickshire which have shared over £1.29million. Projects have ranged from community facilities upgrades and sports programmes, to programmes to provide transportation for people to access community and healthcare services.

Applications for the funds are still being welcomed and give local communities and businesses disrupted by the construction of HS2 the opportunity to receive funding of up to £1 million for projects to improve their local area or support their local economy.

The Funds for Phase One, independently administered by community charity Groundwork UK, support urban and rural, community, environmental and business projects. For more information on Groundwork and the funds, including how to apply, visit https://hs2funds.org.uk/ . You can also watch our short videos which explain how to best demonstrate that your project meets the criteria for the Community, Environment or Business Funds.

HS2 announces new landmark as 700,000 trees planted and over 100 new habitats thriving on Phase One of the project

As part of our extensive environmental programme, our contractors have now planted 700,000 trees and created over 100 wildlife sites along the route between the West Midlands and London .

The wildlife sites represent a mix of different habitat types, including grassland, woodland, scrub and ponds, and are already havens for wildlife including birds, bats, barn owls, badgers, great crested newts, butterflies and dragonflies.

Alongside our environmental contractors, we have designed tailored ecology plans that provide habitats for local wildlife and protected species including new badger setts, bat houses, bird boxes, reptile banks and bug houses, along with wildflower seeding, aquatic habitat creation and the reintroduction of native flora to help local wildlife populations thrive.

Up to 7 million trees will eventually be planted alongside the line from the West Midlands to London and we will leave behind more than 33 square kilometres of new woodland, wildlife and river habitats - the equivalent of 23 new Hyde Parks lining the spine of the country.

In addition, our Woodland Fund has also allocated over £1.2m as part of a grant scheme managed by the Forestry Commission, with 213,000 trees already planted including 92 hectares of new woodland creation and 52 hectares of ancient woodland restoration. For example, a project at Avon Wood in Warwickshire has created a diverse new 11-hectare woodland within three miles of the new railway. More than 18,000 new trees have been planted there, with 30% of the woodland being oak, with the rest mainly made up of hornbeam, alder, beech, lime, holly and birch.

We are continuing to progress with potential new schemes to be supported through the Woodland Fund, which could eventually support an additional 440 hectares of new native woodland creation as well as the restoration of 245 hectares of existing ancient woodland sites. Every habitat site is designed specifically to support local biodiversity, to link up existing wildlife habitats and create ecological networks which help to protect, maintain and enhance biodiversity and allow species to move through the landscape.

Examples of new habitats sites include:

  • In Warwickshire , Finham Brook was previously a short-grazed field with no flowers and very few invertebrates. Since 2018, our contractor Keystone Environmental has planted over 6,000 trees, created four new ponds and a new 35 metre reptile basking bank. The ponds are already being used by great crested newts, skylarks, barn owls, badgers, and dragonflies and butterflies.
  • At South Cubbington Wood , also in Warwickshire, environmental contractor Five Rivers Environmental Contracting have planted 60,000 trees, along with species-rich grasslands. They have created seven new ponds designed for newts to breed in, as well as attracting other wildlife such as frogs, swallows, swifts and badgers. Like many of HS2’s new habitat sites, Cubbington has public rights of way, so local people are able to enjoy the habitats that have been created.
  • At Bernwood in Buckinghamshire , an ecologically and historically valuable area includes a network of ancient woodlands that are home to a range of wildlife, including rare and important species like Bechstein’s Bat and the Black Hairstreak butterfly. Our extensive tree planting has linked existing woodlands to create new bat flightlines away from the railway corridor, and several green bridges will maintain connectivity across the railway and between habitats.
  • In the Colne Valley , we have revealed ambitious plans to create one of the largest areas of chalk grassland on the edge of the Chilterns. The site will receive a continuous supply of chalk from the nearby tunnelling underneath the Chilterns Hills until 2024, helping to establish over 127 hectares of new chalk grassland, woodland, wood pasture and wetland habitats. Field trials are currently in preparation ahead of final seeding, and planting of trees and shrubs in 2025.

We are developing our plans for the River Cole Viaducts and the Chattle Hill Structure, both of which are Key Design Elements (KDEs) of the new railway in Warwickshire. We are holding an online information event or 'webinar' to share our plans with the community, have produced virtual exhibition boards and are asking for your views in an online questionnaire.

    River Cole Viaducts

The section of the HS2 route where the River Cole viaducts are located is known as the Delta Junction. The Delta Junction is a triangular section of line where the HS2 route curves west towards Birmingham and runs north towards Crewe and beyond. It is located within the Cole Valley Landscape Character Area.

    Chattle Hill Structure

The Chattle Hill Structure will allow the HS2 main line to cross over the A446 Lichfield Road, letting vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians pass underneath. A continuous noise barrier will be provided along the east of the track to reduce noise levels for local residents.

    Give us your views

Before construction starts, we are seeking your views on some specific details of the two strcutures, including:

  • Our approach when constructing the structures
  • Landscape and ecology aspects in the surrounding areas
  • We would like you to tell us what you think about our proposals for the River Cole Viaducts and the Chattle Hill Structure.

We will be holding an online information event or 'webinar' to discuss our plans for the River Cole Viaducts and the Chattle Hill Strcuture on Thursday 8 July, from 6.30-8pm .

Please register to attend the online information event Please fill in the online River Cole Viaducts questionnaire Please fill in the online Chattle Hill Structure questionnaire

The closing date for the questionnaire is Wednesday 28 July 2021.

    What happens next?

We will carefully consider your views as part of our ongoing design process for the River Cole Viaducts and the Chattle Hill Strcuture.

Our feedback will be published on the HS2 community website: www.hs2inwarwickshire.co.uk

We will also share what we’ve learned with the local planning authority and Warwickshire County Council to help them assess our final designs once we have submitted them for their approval later this year.

What are Key Design Elements (KDEs)?

KDEs are structures along the route of the new railway that have been recognised to be important. This could be due to their size, proximity to stakeholders or their location within sensitive areas. The design for the viaduct has been developed with consideration for technical and structural requirements, as well as the impact on its surroundings.

    What is a viaduct?

A viaduct is a type of bridge, made up of multiple spans and connecting two points of terrain. On this project they will carry the high speed railway across valleys, rivers, roads and flood plains. Modern high speed trains travel at around four times the speed of Victorian trains so they require a flatter, straighter track, passing over and under the natural landscape. Modern viaducts have to cope with large longitudinal forces due to the braking and traction of high speed trains. They require stiff and strong supports, known as piers, to transfer the braking load forces from the train, which can be as much as a 770 tonnes load, to the foundations.

Birmingham and Fazeley Canal Viaduct: Discover more about our designs at online information event and complete questionnaire

The Birmingham and Fazeley Canal Viaduct Key Design Element (KDE) is a significant structure which will be located about 1.1 miles west of Lea Marston and is just north of Junction 9 of the M42 Motorway. The viaduct will cross over the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal after crossing the M42 Motorway to the south via the HS2 M42 'Marston Box' structure.

We would like you to tell us what you think about our proposals for the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal Viaduct, your current experience of the canal and how you would like to use it in the future. There may also be an opportunity to make use of the space next to the viaduct pier (one of the supports) along the towpath of the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal and we would appreciate your views on this.

    Give us your views

The importance of those who use the canal, including local walkers, will be integral to the context and design of this structure and we recognise the impact this new feature will have along this route. We want it to respect its surroundings and the local area and to help us develop the design of the viaduct, we are seeking to understand how best to use the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal and the wider area. This includes considering:

  • How you currently use the canal
  • How you may want to use the spaces in and around this location in future
  • How this section of canal fits into your wider journey
  • We will be holding an online information event or 'webinar' to discuss our plans for the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal Viaduct on Tuesday 6 July, 12-1.15pm .

Please register to attend the online information event Please complete the online questionnaire What are Key Design Elements (KDEs)?

Only one week to go: Cast your vote to name HS2 Tunnel Boring Machine in Warwickshire

There is just one week to go before voting closes in the national competition to name our third Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), which will dig a one-mile twin bore tunnel under Long Itchington Wood in Warwickshire. Visit www.hs2.org.uk/tbmvoting to cast your vote by June 30 .

Long Itchington Wood Tunnel north portal site

More than 180 entries submitted by people in Warwickshire, asked to nominate the names of women closely associated with the county, were whittled down to a shortlist of three. The three candidates are:

Anne - named after Anne Hathaway, who was the wife of the country’s most famous playwright William Shakespeare. She was born in 1556 and her childhood home nearby in Stratford-upon-Avon was bought by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in 1892 and turned into a museum. Anne was suggested by a Nuneaton resident.

Dorothy - named after Dorothy Hodgkin, who in 1964 became the first British woman to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Her discoveries included confirming the structure of penicillin, and her work with insulin paved the way for it to be used on a large scale for treatment of diabetes. She died in 1994 in Shipston-on-Stour in Warwickshire. Dorothy was suggested by a student at Warwickshire College Group.

Mary Ann - named after Mary Ann Evans, better known by her pen name George Eliot, who was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She was born in Nuneaton and her novels, most famously 'Middlemarch', are celebrated for their realism and psychological insights. A North Leamington School pupil suggested Mary Ann.

Please vote for your favourite name

We are planning to reveal the winning name later this year.

The Long Itchington Wood TBM will begin tunnelling later this year. Operated by our main works contractor Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV), the 2,000-tonne machine will take around five months to complete the first bore of two parallel tunnels. The Long Itchington Wood tunnel means that the ancient woodland above the tunnelling works will not be disturbed and the final section will be a ‘green tunnel' with a soil ‘roof’ built around the tunnel entrance to blend the portal into the natural landscape.

This is the third TBM put to a public naming vote. Our first two machines, Florence and Cecilia, are already tunnelling under the Chilterns and were named after famous local Buckinghamshire women: Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, spent many years living in the county, while Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, a pioneering astronomer and astrophysicist, was born in Buckinghamshire.

HS2 launches national vote to name Warwickshire Tunnel Boring Machine

We have today launched a national vote to name our third Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) which is set to create a one-mile twin bore tunnel under Long Itchington Wood in Warwickshire .

Long Itchington Wood Tunnel north portal site aerial view

Three names have been shortlisted from over 180 entries submitted by people in Warwickshire, who were asked to nominate the names of women closely associated with the county. The vote is now open, with the online competition running until the end of June . The names are:

Anne - named after Anne Hathaway, who was the wife of the country’s most famous playwright William Shakespeare. She was born in 1556 and her childhood home nearby in Stratford-upon-Avon was bought by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in 1892 and turned into a museum. Anne was suggested by a Nuneaton resident.

She was born in Nuneaton and her novels, most famously 'Middlemarch', are celebrated for their realism and psychological insights. A North Leamington School pupil suggested Mary Ann.

Please vote for your favourite name

The Long Itchington Wood TBM will begin tunnelling later this year and be operated by our main works contractor for the West Midlands, Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV). The 2,000-tonne TBM, manufactured in Germany by Herrenknecht, will be around 10 metres wide and will take about five months to complete the first bore of two parallel tunnels.

The Long Itchington Wood tunnel avoids disrupting the ancient woodland located above the tunnelling works. Once the first bore is complete, the TBM will be extracted at the South Portal before being transported by road back to the North Portal to commence the second bore. The final section will become a ‘green tunnel’ - also known as a cut and cover tunnel - where a soil ‘roof’ is built around the tunnel entrance to integrate the portal into the natural landscape.

This is the third of our TBMs that will be put to a public vote to name it, with the first two machines already tunnelling under the Chilterns. They were named after two famous local Buckinghamshire women: Florence Nightingale - the founder of modern nursing who spent many years living in Buckinghamshire; and pioneering astronomer and astrophysicist, Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, who was born in Buckinghamshire.

The national vote will close at the end of June, with the winner expected to be announced later in the summer.

HS2 launches Interchange Station construction contract opportunity

We have today launched the search for a construction contractor to build Interchange Station. Bidders are asked to put themselves forward for the £370m contract which could support up to 1,000 jobs at the peak of construction, as part of the Government’s Plan for Jobs.

Interchange Station will be one of the best connected stations on the new high speed network in the Midlands, and is set to pave the way for huge growth plans around the site being led by the Urban Growth Company that will support 30,000 jobs, up to 3,000 new homes and 70,000m2 of commercial space.

These will form part of the UK Central Hub area plans for 70,000 jobs, 5,000 new homes and 650,000m2 of commercial space, generating £6.2bn GVA per year and bringing 1.3m people to within a 45-minute public transport commute of the station.

It is the first railway station globally to achieve the BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification at the design stage – a measure of sustainability for new and refurbished buildings – putting it in the top 1% of buildings in the UK for eco-friendly credentials. This recognises the station’s eco-friendly features, including maximising natural daylight and ventilation, a roof design which can capture and reuse rainwater, and features to enable net zero carbon emissions from day-to-day energy consumption. Energy efficient technology will also be incorporated, such as air source heat pumps and LED lighting.

The construction site for the station covers an area of 150 hectares, and is located within a triangle of land formed by the M42, A45 and A452. Work so far has included construction of modular bridges over the M42 and A446, and remodelling of the road network in the area to facilitate access to the new station.

There will be up to five trains per hour passing through the brand new station in both directions, with an estimated total of 175,000 seats per day, making this one of the best connected transport interchanges in the country and a new gateway to the UK.

The tender shortlist for the contract will be announced later this year and the contract awarded in 2022.

Update on the re-opening of A425 Leamington Road, Southam

As part of our works to safely excavate a 15-metre-deep trench and construct the 'cut-and-cover' section of the Long Itchington Wood Tunnel, we closed a section of the A425 Leamington Road near Southam in October 2020.

The work has been delivered by HS2’s main works contractor for the area, Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV). A significant amount of progress has been made at the site, enabling the road to be re-opened this Summer as originally planned. Our target is to re-open the A425 by early August, subject to the receipt of necessary consents, and we will confirm a specific re-opening date in July.

BBV will continue to work in the area and during 2022 will create a temporary diversion road around the site of the Long Itchington Wood tunnel south portal. The diversion road will allow BBV to complete the construction of the remainder of the “cut and cover” section of the tunnel that will sit under the A425.

To find out more about the re-opening of the road and the future work, please register for our webinar on 15 June from 18.00 to 20.00. During this online engagement event we will be available to answer your questions and provide a background to the planned re-opening of the A425 Leamington Road. Registration details for the webinar will be published here shortly.

Other HS2 related highway impacts in the vicinity of the A425

There will be other HS2 related highway works close to the A425. These include:

Closure of Welsh Road – 5 and 6 June 2021

LM will be closing Welsh Road from 08.00 on Saturday 5 June until 17.00 on Sunday 6 June. The reason for the closures is to create a safe working zone whilst we carry out resurfacing works, remove some fencing and move a road sign around the access point at the HS2 compound.

Access will still be maintained for households and businesses along the road. All works are subject to consent, site and weather conditions. Dates may also be subject to change. Please register at hs2inwarwickshire.co.uk to receive updates about works in your area and for up-to-date traffic information go to one.network . Further information on upcoming HS2 highway related works in the vicinity of the A425 will be published here.

We have today announced the launch of ‘Florence’ – the first of 10 HS2 Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) that will dig 64 miles of tunnel on Phase One of the UK’s new high speed railway. ‘Florence’ was launched from our South Portal site next to the M25 in Hertfordshire, at an event attended by HS2 Minister Andrew Stephenson .

Florence, at 2,000 tonnes and 170m-long – the largest ever used on a UK rail project – will dig 10 miles of tunnel under the Chilterns, operating 24/7 for the next three years. Designed specifically for the mix of chalk and flints under the Chilterns, Florence and her identical TBM 'Cecilia'will dig separate tunnels for north and southbound trains. Each machine operates as a self-contained underground factory - digging the tunnel, lining it with concrete wall segments and grouting them into place at a speed of around 15 metres a day. Each tunnel will require 56,000 precision engineered, fibre-reinforced segments – which will all be made on site.

A crew of 17 people will operate each TBM, working in shifts to keep the machines running 24/7. They will be supported by over 100 people on the surface, managing the logistics and maintaining the smooth progress of the tunnelling operation. Chalk excavated from the tunnels will be used for landscaping at the south portal site once construction is complete, creating wildlife-rich chalk grassland habitats across 127 hectares of the southern Chiltern hills. Find out more about HS2's tunnelling programme .

Named after nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale – a name suggested by local children due to her residence at nearby Claydon House in Buckinghamshire, and chosen in a public vote – the TBM will dig the first of a pair of 10 mile long tunnels under the Chiltern hills and help to safeguard the woodland and wildlife habitats above ground, before emerging near Hyde Heath. A second machine ‘Cecilia’ will launch next month to excavate the second tunnel at the South Portal site.

Built by Herrenknecht, a world leader in TBM manufacturing, at its factory in south-west Germany, the two 170m long machines were transported to the UK in more than 300 separate shipments last year , before being reassembled, tested and commissioned by an expert team of tunnelling engineers at the Chiltern tunnel south portal site, near the M25 to the north-west of London.

The first two TBMs will be operated by main works contractor, Align – a joint venture formed of three international infrastructure companies: Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine, and VolkerFitzpatrick. Align is recruiting 1,200 personnel in total, including 100 apprentices, to work on this area of the project and are targeting their recruitment and investment in upskilling local people who are currently unemployed, with a particular focus on women, the under 25s and those with disabilities, helping us support the UK Government’s Plan for Jobs to protect, support and create employment during the COVID-19 crisis.

More than 16,000 jobs and over 500 apprenticeships are already being supported by the project, which is set to transform transport links between Britain’s major cities, free up space on the rail network for more freight and local services and support the UK’s transition to net zero carbon emissions.

The names of the two TBMs were suggested by students at Meadow High School in Hillingdon and The Chalfonts Community College, Buckinghamshire, which are close to the tunnel launch site. They were inspired by Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern medicine, and pioneering astronomer and astrophysicist, Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin.

Some facts and figures about the Chiltern tunnel TBMs :

  • The tunnels will go as deep as 80m below the ground – ensuring communities and countryside above are not impacted by the railway
  • The cutter head will rotate at a speed of up to 3.2rpm with the machine expected to cover 15.6 metres per day.
  • When they start they will run almost non-stop 24 hours a day for 3.5 years
  • They will convert the spoil into slurry which will be pumped back to the south portal site where it will be treated before being used for landscaping on-site, removing the need for additional HGVs on local roads.
  • The total volume excavated by both TBM is 2.7million cubic metres

HS2 Notification: Changes to traffic rerouting around Northway Island from Monday 24 May 2021

To date, we have connected parts of the existing road network to some of the new routes we created, and installed new pedestrian footpaths, kerb lines and central reservations in the area. We started the creation of the new T-junction in April. This programme will continue with some changes to the existing traffic rerouting around Northway Island which commenced on Monday 26 April .

From Monday 24 May, one of the short sections of Northway Island that was closed on Monday 26 April will reopen, whilst the other section remains closed. Depending on your direction of travel, road users will no longer be able to travel around the whole of the Island and you may be redirected from Northway Island, along the B4438, and back.

You will still be able to access all routes, there will just be a short diversion from some parts of Northway Island. Direction of travel along the B4438, A452 and Northway will be unaffected.

These traffic measures will be reviewed around July 2021. We’ll keep you informed of any changes to the direction of travel around Northway Island before they take effect.

In conjunction with the traffic measures outlined above, we will also install temporary 24-hour traffic lights on a short section of the A452 from Monday 24 May for one week.

We will maintain access to all buildings, businesses and travel routes in the area during this programme.

You can view the works notification, including a map, here .

New look HS2 online educational resources focus on STEM stars of the future

Our dedicated education pages on the HS2 website have undergone a major redesign, with a collection of new resources to help teachers bring a careers context to curriculum learning with the aim of inspiring young people to take an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects and careers .

Teachers are able to find relevant resources much more easily through the introduction of a filter function, there are new resources available with supporting videos and also a workshop delivery guide with activities tailored to pupils ranging from the ages of 5 all the way up to 18.

View the new look educational resources pages - download guides, lesson plans, videos and worksheets

The fresh look of the educational resources follows on from the introduction earlier this year of a suite of curriculum-linked projects designed to help teachers and parents home schooling during the Covid-19 pandemic when we were unable to deliver our regular programme of STEM workshops and schools were less able to take students 'off-curriculum' for career-themed activities during lockdown.

Created by our Skills, Employment and Education team, the resource pages include plans for STEM lessons which teachers can use to introduce a careers context to regular curriculum lessons. Activities take around 1-2 hours to complete and include using maths skills to work out how to construct a bridge across a motorway, researching the ecology of great created newts to create new habitats and using archaeological information to interpret the history of a site. Pupils also have the opportunity to design a new product to improve the customer experience when travelling by train and use their science skills to create an environmental improvement plan for their school.

We have also included a delivery guide for teachers who would like to run a STEM inspiration day in their school. This includes videos, teacher notes, presentations and worksheets for activities where students can develop their skills through hands-on and team build challenges to inspire them to become EPIC (Extraordinary People Initiating Change) engineers. Students develop their STEM powers, exploring the essential skills that are needed to be successful in a STEM career. Activities are underpinned by examples from the world of work, with students finding out about careers in transport infrastructure as they take on different roles in the challenges.

Activities include 'Stations of the Future': a team-based design-and-present activity where students compete to design a futuristic train station considering future trends and the needs of all customers and also tunnel building, where students design, construct and test a supporting structure for a cut and cover tunnel.

We have also introduced STEM projects accredited by the British Science Association, which, when completed, can be entered for a CREST Award. These are longer projects aimed at inspiring pupils to become scientists and engineers that encourage students to carry out independent research or investigation. The target age and duration of the projects vary.

The updated online resources also include activities adapted for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to encourage them to think about pursuing STEM careers. Downloadable lessons for SEND students include working in teams to design a train station, learning about ecosystems and building an insect hotel, and preparing for independent rail travel through role play.

Younger students aged between 7-11 can also get involved in shorter activities ranging from making rail tracks from everyday materials, solving puzzles and planning a railway route.

Final call for Warwickshire residents to name HS2’s Tunnel Boring Machine: Entries close on April 30th

Last month we launched a competition for local residents to find a name for the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) that will start excavating under Long Itchington Wood in Warwickshire later this year.

HS2 Long Itchington Wood Tunnel north portal site

North Leamington School, Warwickshire College Group, The Coleshill School and Long Itchington Scout Group have already submitted names, along with Warwickshire County Council.

Traditionally, tunnelling machines are always named after women and we are asking people in Warwickshire to help choose a name based on their female role models – whether famous people or unsung heroines. The 2,000-tonne machine will be operated by our main works contractor Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) and will create a one-mile twin bore tunnel under Long Itchington Wood.

There is an online portal for Warwickshire residents to submit their chosen names and you are encouraged to choose people who have an association with Warwickshire and may include, for example, actresses, artists, scientists, engineers, authors, athletes and musicians. Names may also include the unsung heroines of Warwickshire, including individuals who deserve recognition for their contributions to the local community.

Please submit names on the online competition portal by Friday, April 30th

The competition portal will close on Friday 30 April, and a final shortlist of nominations will be selected and put to a public vote in May. The winner will be revealed this summer.

This is the third of our tunnel boring machines put to a public vote to name, with the first two machines due to start creating the tunnel under the Chilterns this year. They were named after two famous local Buckinghamshire women: Florence Nightingale - the founder of modern nursing who spent many years living in Buckinghamshire; and pioneering astronomer and astrophysicist, Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, who was born in Buckinghamshire.

Tunnel Boring Machine to be used in Long Itchington Wood Tunnel 4

The tunnel will preserve the ancient woodland, with the final section forming a ‘green tunnel’ - also known as a cut and cover tunnel - where a roof above will return the land to the natural landscape. Around 170 engineers are working on the TBM during its construction and assembly, and a team will then work around the clock excavating the one-mile tunnel.

It will take five months to dig the first bore of the tunnel, and then it will be extracted at the south portal before being transported by road back to the north portal to commence the second bore.

Notice of ground investigations surveys – Attleboro Lane, Water Orton

Preparations for main construction work on HS2 are now well underway. To continue with this work, we will be undertaking ground investigation surveys within various locations in land situated off Attleboro Lane, Water Orton. These surveys help us to understand more about the ground conditions where we want to build the railway. The surveys will involve taking soil samples and boring trial holes in different locations. To complete our survey works, we will transport drilling rigs to site by trailer. Drilling rigs will then be positioned on site and our workforce will travel to site every day by a 4x4 vehicle.

Works are scheduled to start 19 April and will be working in the area for 4 weeks.

Have your say on plans for the design and construction of the Oxford Canal Viaduct

Today we have revealed the first images of our planned Oxford Canal Viaduct and are seeking views from the local community about the design of the viaduct between Banbury and Daventry.

Set low in the landscape, three reinforced concrete spans will take the railway 60m across the canal, towpath and a country lane near the village of Wormleighton in Warwickshire. It is one of 15 viaducts and bridges across the central section of the HS2 route which is being designed by HS2’s main works contractor EKFB - a team made up of Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial and Bam Nuttall - working with design partners Arcadis and architects Moxon.

We would like your views on our design for the viaduct and the surrounding landscape, especially:

  • Which of our objectives are most important to you?
  • Which pier (the structures which support the viaduct) finish do you prefer?
  • What are your views on landscape design?
  • Explore the Oxford Canal Viaduct design in our virtual exhibition room

Due to the Coronavirus (COVID 19) pandemic and in response to Government guidance on social distancing it is not possible to engage directly with community groups in the usual way.

We have therefore created a virtual exhibition to share our design for the viaduct and to seek your feedback . Click on the image below to visit the virtual exhibition and explore the design proposals in detail.

    OxfordCanalVirtualRoom

  • View or download our Oxford Canal KDE virtual exhibition boards, March 2021
  • Please fill in our online survey to give us your views by April 30, 2021 Sign up to our online events to find out more

We are also holding online information events or 'webinars' where our team will provide a presentation on how the design and construction works are developing and will be available to answer any questions you may have via a live Q&A.

These online 'webinars' have been set up to give the local community the opportunity to hear from the team designing and building the railway in your area. The events are being held on two dates. Please select which date to you would like to attend when registering:

  • Thursday 8 April 12:00 to 13:00
  • Tuesday 13 April 18:00 to 19:00
  • What are Key Design Elements (KDEs)?

Update on pipeline diversion works near Leicester Lane, Cubbington

To allow for the construction of the new railway and to continue to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply, Cadent will be moving an underground gas pipeline that runs near Leicester Lane, Cubbington. We expect to complete all our work by the end of 2021.

    What are we doing?

We started carrying out some preparation works on land either side of Leicester Lane on 8 March 2021. Due to reasons beyond our control, we have had to pause our work temporarily.

We will be re-starting the work on 29 March. The works involve:

    • Removal of some vegetation on land north and south of Leicester Lane. Appropriate ecological surveys will be undertaken before any vegetation clearance. Our ecologist will be present throughout the activity to ensure there is no disruption to local wildlife.

    • Creating a site access either side of Leicester Lane. We will be using temporary traffic lights on a section of Leicester Lane so we can create our site access safely. Signs will be in place to make people aware.

We will keep local people up to date as we progress to main diversion works.

    How will this affect you?

To minimise disruption to local people over Easter weekend, we’ll be pausing work and removing the temporary traffic lights after finishing for the day on Thursday 1 April. We’ll then reinstall the traffic lights and resume work on Tuesday 6 April. We plan to complete our preparation works on Friday 9 April 2021.

Standard vehicles and equipment will be used, and we do not anticipate the works causing significant disruption to local people.

Warwick Arts Centre's 20:20 project to benefit from £250,000 HS2 community funding award

Warwick Arts Centre has been successful in its bid to our Community and Environment Fund (CEF) and has secured £250,000 towards its Warwick 20:20 project.

Based within the main campus of the University of Warwick in Coventry, the project involves relocating the Mead Gallery and replacing the existing cinema with new state-of-the-art facilities. The upgraded venue will offer the opportunity for the public to engage with Warwick Arts Centre as a community hub for the arts in a range of ways, including volunteering, participating in programmes and projects and attending events.

The grant will help transform the entrance and foyer and replace blockwork with large expanses of glass to create a light, engaging and welcoming space for visitors, creating a new three screen cinema where a diverse range of films can be shown, and also relocating the Mead Gallery from the first floor to the ground floor, improving visibility and accessibility.

Accessibility will be enhanced through new accessible toilets, a gender neutral toilet and the installation of an evacuation lift. The building will also be environmentally sustainable, with the introduction of LED lighting, improved heat recovery and a connection to the district heat network, reducing carbon emissions.

The new Arts Centre is a major statement of investment in the arts that will last for decades to come. Communities and audiences will be able to experience the works of contemporary international, national, regional and local artists through more than 2,500 individual events and performances each year.

To celebrate the opening of Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture, this summer Warwick Arts Centre will be presenting some events to kick-start a year of big moments for the city. Social distancing measures will be in place and visitors will receive a warm welcome and the chance to experience some much-missed live theatre. In October 2021, the Centre will fully re-open, with a full programme of events, many rescheduled from last year, and continued City of Culture celebrations.

Our Community and Business funds were launched in 2017 and have to date supported 23 projects in Warwickshire which have shared over £1.3million. Projects have ranged from community facilities upgrades, sports programmes, to programmes to provide transportation for people to access community and healthcare services.

    Community and Business Funds

With construction of HS2 underway, applications for the funds are still being welcomed. Our Community and Environment Fund (CEF) and the Business and Local Economy Fund (BLEF) for Phase One are worth £40 million. They give local communities and businesses disrupted by the construction of HS2 the opportunity to receive funding of up to £1 million for projects to improve their local area or support their local economy.

The Funds for Phase One, independently administered by community charity Groundwork UK, support urban and rural, community, environmental and business projects. For more information on Groundwork and the funds, including how to apply, visit https://hs2funds.org.uk/ . River diversion in Warwickshire avoided as a result of HS2 design refinements

We have revealed revised designs of the railway in the Canley Brook area near Kenilworth in Warwickshire which will significantly reduce environmental impacts and avoid a major realignment of a local river, preserving the home of protected wildlife such as otters and bats .

Artist's impression of Canley Brook structures

The design changes, developed by our main works contractor Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV) with their Design JV partners, mean that the railway will travel in a slightly shallower and longer cutting in this area. This means that a viaduct can be built over Canley Brook, so it will only need a small 80 metre diversion rather than the 700 metres in the original design.

As a result, this will lead to significantly reduced environmental impacts, including around 600,000 cubic metres less material needing to be excavated and 28,000 cubic metres less concrete needed as a result of removing the retaining wall for the Canley Brook realignment. Less excavation and building work will also cut the amount of construction traffic on local roads, removing over 2,500 lorry movements, reducing noise and disruption for the local community.

Local people will have an opportunity to find out more about the refinements at a forthcoming webinar led by BBV’s community engagement team, on Thursday 25th March, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm

Please register for this free online information event

Replacement of two kilometres of retaining walls with cutting slopes will also reduce the ‘barrier effect’ of the scheme for species and provide additional opportunities for new habitats and grassland for newts and reptiles. There are also plans for improved integrated landscape design. More vegetation will be preserved and the overall amount of land required will be reduced, meaning more land can be returned to agricultural use after construction.

There are also plans to create a high-quality wetland habitat either side of the realigned section of Canley Brook, as well as additional woodland, hedgerow and species-rich grassland habitat on both sides of Crackley Road Cutting. This will benefit a range of protected and local species and contribute to our objective of achieving no net loss of biodiversity.

Additional landscape bunds (raised earthwork structures) and noise barriers will be incorporated along the route for increased visual screening, better integration and to mitigate noise impacts.

Stafford company Deep Soil Mixing uses recycling on a massive scale at HS2 site in the Midlands

Stafford-based ground remediation contractor, Deep Soil Mixing used a sustainable soil mixing solution to geotechnically improve the ground at our site near Coleshill in Warwickshire, eliminating nearly 1,000 lorry movement from local roads.

The work was carried out to allow access for construction equipment and stabilise the ground ahead of the installation of a new gas main pipe which needed to be relocated as part of our works.

The company’s soil mixing technique prevents both the removal of material off site and the need for importing fill, which creates huge environmental benefits. The technique involves analysing small samples of soil in a laboratory to determine what the soil needs to be combined with to make it suitable for re-use. The mixing process is then carried out on the site, removing the need to take soil away and replace with new material.

This method meant that nearly 1,000 lorry movements were not required to transport excavated material to landfill, and no need for clean hardcore material to be brought to site. The technique also resulted in improved cost efficiencies and a shortened construction programme.

The project was completed in six months and included preliminary testing and site trials before work began on site. The testing was undertaken at the company’s in-house laboratory and mixing tests carried out on various soil/binder mixes as well as field trials to test the chosen binder in-situ, to ensure the right deep soil mixing solution was undertaken at the site.

Deep Soil Mixing were working for Land and Marine Engineering Ltd (LME), contracted to ours enabling works contractor LM JV (Laing O'Rourke and J. Murphy & Sons). Works in this area are preparing for the railway to be built on a viaduct before it swings west through a tunnel and on towards the new station at Curzon Street in Birmingham.

Warwickshire residents, schools and community groups asked to name HS2’s Long Itchington Wood Tunnel Boring Machine

We would like to invite local residents, schools and community groups in Warwickshire to take part in a competition to name the 2,000 tonne tunnel boring machine that will start to dig under Long Itchington Wood this summer.

Tunnel Boring Machine to be used in Long Itchington Wood Tunnel 4

Warwickshire County Council has started the ball rolling with the suggestion of famous local author George Eliot. North Leamington School, Warwickshire College Group, The Coleshill School and Long Itchington Scout Group have also already signed up to take part, and will benefit from a new skills programme aimed at introducing young people to careers in engineering, through virtual education sessions run by ourselves and our contractor BBV Joint Venture (Balfour Beatty Group and VINCI Construction).

Following tradition, tunnel boring machines are always named after women, and we are asking people in the county to help choose a name based on their female role models – whether famous people or unsung heroines. Suggestions will be shortlisted in May and three finalists put to a national public vote, before a winner is announced in the summer.

We have launched an online portal for Warwickshire residents to submit their chosen names and you are encouraged to choose people who have an association with Warwickshire and may include, for example, actresses, artists, scientists, engineers, authors, athletes and musicians. Names may also include the unsung heroines of Warwickshire, including individuals who deserve recognition for their contributions to the local community.

Please submit names on the online competition portal

The competition portal will remain open until the end of April, and a final shortlist of nominations will be selected and put to a public vote in May. The winner will be revealed during the launch of the Long Itchington Wood tunnel boring machine this summer.

The 2,000 tonne tunnel boring machine will be operated by BBV and will create a one-mile twin bore tunnel under Long Itchington Wood. It will take five months to dig the first bore of the tunnel, and then it will be extracted at the south portal before being transported by road back to the north portal to commence the second bore.

The tunnel will preserve the ancient woodland in this location, and the final section will form a ‘green tunnel’ - also known as a cut and cover tunnel - where a roof above will return the land to the natural landscape. We’ve already planted 80,000 trees in the Midlands, with an additional 47,000 planted this winter in Warwickshire as part of our green corridor programme that will deliver new woodlands, wildlife habitats and green spaces for people to enjoy.

Around 170 engineers are working on the TBM during its construction and assembly, and a team will then work around the clock excavating the one-mile tunnel. This TBM, along with those soon to start digging under the Chilterns and, a little later in the year, underneath London, is a key element of our role in the Government’s commitment to Build Back Better.

This is the third of our tunnel boring machines to be named by public vote. The first two machines, which are due to start creating the tunnel under the Chilterns, were named after famous local Buckinghamshire women: Florence Nightingale - the founder of modern nursing who spent many years living in Buckinghamshire; and pioneering astronomer and astrophysicist, Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, who was born in Buckinghamshire.

Changes to traffic management around Harbury

We sincerely apologise for issues resulting from road closures relating to the power supply for the HS2 Long Itchington Wood tunnel boring machine and the resulting impact on the local communities. We acknowledge that, in this instance, we have fallen short in providing advance warning of the decision to work on two roads at the same time.

However, we are working hard to get the B4452 between the A425 and Butt Lane back open for the local community.

Following our recent notification Ref: HS2-EW-LM-Ph1-Ar-No-N1-Traf-18-01/11/2021, on the works in our area page here , we notified the community of remedial works that need to be carried along the B4452 and B4451 between Ufton and Bishops Itchington.

Upon starting these works, we found further issues. This meant that our anticipated closure dates had to be adapted and resulted in us having to close the B4452 between the A425 and Butt Lane and the B4452 between Butt Lane and Deppers bridge concurrently for a short period of time.

The additional works has meant that the dates for subsequent road closures has changed and are now as follows:

    - Ongoing to 7 February - Deppers Bridge B4452 closed between Butt Lane and Station Road.

    - 8 to 10 February - Station Road B4451 closed between Deppers Bridge and Lakin Drive.

These works may be subject to further change

Access will still be maintained for households and businesses along both routes and a clearly signposted diversion will be in place. We will also ensure that all road signage reflects approved changes.

All works may be subject site and weather conditions. Dates are also subject to change.

HS2 Notification: Temporary single lane closures on and around Biddles Loop from Monday 15 February 2021 for two weeks

We are currently preparing as much of the future HS2 railway route as possible to ensure that main construction work can commence on time in the Interchange area. Our activities include some vegetation and tree clearance. To conduct this safely, we need to install temporary single lane closures in the Interchange area. You can find out more information about sustainable high speed travel here .

Subject to obtaining the relevant consents, we’ll install temporary single lane closures on and around Biddles Loop from Monday 15 February for two weeks. Our working hours will be 9.30am 3.30pm, Monday to Friday. Our contractors may be on site up to an hour before and after those times to set up and close down the site.

You will still be able to travel along all routes in both directions.

Our works start date and duration may change because our works are dependent on the relevant consents being granted, which may affect when we carry out our planned traffic measures.

These traffic measures will be carried out in conjunction with existing 24-hour single lane closures on and around Northway Island. These works were communicated in December 2020 .

You can view the works notification, including a map, here .

New  jobs board showcases opportunities to work on HS2

We have launched our brand-new jobs site to promote the estimated 20,000 roles that Phase One of the project is creating in the months and years ahead, the first time all opportunities to work directly on HS2 have been available to search in one place.

This follows the Prime Minister's announcement of the 22,000 job opportunities available on the high speed rail project, when officially starting construction in September 2020. The initiative has the backing of the Department for Work and Pensions and a Memorandum of Understanding, which sets out the agreed roles and responsibilities of HS2 Ltd and its job brokerage partners, is in place between the two organisations.

The new digital platform, hosted on the HS2 website  , offers those looking for work or a change of career, the opportunity to search the very latest vacancies with our construction partners and station contractors delivering the London to Birmingham section of the railway. The jobs board allows prospective candidates to search for vacancies by region or specialism, so they can quickly identify opportunities that match their criteria.

In September 2020, our four main works contractors and two station construction partners estimated that they would create over 20,000 jobs to support the decade-long construction programme for Phase One of the project. The jobs board, highlighting opportunities to work with us within the  supply chain, makes it easier for jobseekers to navigate and find a position that matches their career aspirations.

It has been developed as part of a job brokerage partnership model, bringing together local authorities, enterprise partnerships, charities and employment support services along the 140-mile route of the first phase of the new railway. Job brokerage partners will play an integral role in supporting individuals from local communities, disadvantaged and underrepresented groups into employment on the project, in line with objectives set out in our Skills, Employment and Education Strategy.

We have already supported 13,000 jobs, including more than 400 new apprenticeship starts and over 550 previously unemployed individuals. Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, we and our contractors also supported over 100 work experience placements to ensure that individuals are actively engaged with the programme and have the very best opportunity to capitalise on future career openings.

The start of main construction works last year was a catalyst for the project, spearheading £12bn of contract opportunities which British businesses are beginning to bid for.  As our tier one contractors begin procuring suppliers and services required to deliver their work packages, the number of job opportunities will increase. This heightened demand has created new career pathways and long-term career prospects for individuals at all levels, in both blue and white-collar roles.

Please click here for more information about HS2’s job brokerage programme, or to search for vacancies on the new job platform .

Home learning activities for the high-speed railway builders of the future

With many parents supporting children who are learning at home during the current time, we have developed a range of interesting curriculum-linked projects to work on at home. These include shorter activities ideal for families supporting younger children with learning at home and pre-planned lessons that secondary school teachers could set students as part of their curriculum learning.

The online resources were created as a result of us being unable to visit schools to deliver our regular programme of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) workshops because of Covid-19 restrictions and also schools being less able to take students 'off-curriculum' for career-themed activities due to the disruption caused by the pandemic.

Our Skills, Employment and Education team has created plans for STEM lessons which teachers can use to introduce a careers context to regular curriculum lessons. The activities are expected to take 1-2 hours to complete and are aimed primarily at 11-14 year-olds. Lessons include using maths skills to decide on how to construct a bridge across a motorway, researching the ecology of great created newts to create new habitats and using archaeological information to interpret the history of a site. There are also longer STEM projects and workshops available online, where students can develop their skills through hands-on and team build challenges to inspire them to become EPIC engineers.

During the past year, five HS2 colleagues have become Enterprise Advisors for schools for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Our work with these schools revealed a demand for STEM activities adapted for SEND students, to encourage them to consider STEM careers. Online lessons for SEND students include working in teams to design a train station, learning about ecosystems and building an insect hotel, and preparing for independent rail travel through role play.

Younger students aged between 7-11 can also get involved in shorter activities ranging from making rail tracks from everyday materials, solving puzzles and planning a railway route.

Signup to our webinar to find out more about the new designs revealed for the Water Orton Viaducts

Following public consultation, we've revealed new designs for two viaducts near the village of Water Orton in Warwickshire, including new landscaped areas that will provide green public spaces and wildlife habitats.

In Spring 2020, we asked local people for their views on the design of the Water Orton viaducts, and much of the feedback focused on improving the landscape around the structure of the railway. Suggestions included creating a green space for the village which could provide a recreational area and an observation spot to view wildlife, as well as a pathway for walking and cycling.

As a result, our landscape architects and engineers from Systra and Mott MacDonald working closely with architects Weston Williamson + Partners have developed new plans for a more connected and accessible area that will include tree planting and new wildlife habitats with an opportunity, subject to local interest, for a community orchard or area of allotments.

To find out more about the viaducts, including the latest designs, view our Water Orton Viaducts Design information Booklet, January 2021 .

Signup to our webinar here to find out more about the latest designs

This webinar has been set up to give residents the opportunity to hear and ask questions about:

  • the design for the Water Orton viaducts
  • landscape design and ecology within the area of the viaducts
  • Our team will provide a presentation on the Water Orton viaducts and will be available to answer any questions you may have during the event.

HS2 set to reach 730,000 planted trees landmark by spring 2021

Over 300,000 trees will be planted by our specialist ecology teams across the Phase One route during the winter months, taking the total number of trees planted between London and the Midlands to more than 730,000 by this spring .

The planting initiative is part of our extensive Green Corridor programme, designed to create a network of bigger, better-connected, habitats and new green spaces for people to enjoy. 430,000 trees have already been planted across Phase One and up to 7 million trees will eventually be planted along this part of the route, with many new grasslands, meadows and recreational areas for local communities.

This short video highlights progress so far in the delivery of the Green Corridor.

In Warwickshire and the wider West Midlands , 60,000 trees will be planted at locations around South Cubbington Wood, Ashbeds Wood, Fulfen Wood, Ravenshaw and Broadwells Wood. A broad range of tree and shrub species will be planted to reflect each local area , including oak, hazel, birch, holly and hawthorn. This builds on the 80,000 trees already planted in the Midlands, with 40 ponds and many acres of wetland, heathland and meadow also created across the region.

Through Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire , advanced planting and woodland compensation planting is being undertaken at West Hyde and Horn Hill, Wendover Dean, Aylesbury, Calvert and near the village of Ladbroke, by specialist ecology and landscape companies.

In West Ruislip , planting will create new woodland areas to provide connected habitats for bats . Trees being planted include field maple, hornbeam, hazel, holly, bird cherry, mountain ash, yew and spindle. There will also be areas of grassland and ponds created to protect local biodiversity and create new homes for a mix of wildlife.

These areas will quickly develop to create new opportunities for wildlife and people, bolstering local wildlife corridors by linking with existing woodlands and other habitats. New wildlife habitats in a variety of locations also include badger setts, bat houses, bird boxes, reptile banks and bug houses to help local wildlife populations thrive.

Green Corridor prospectus and mapping tool

We have developed a new online map showing where we are delivering Green Corridor activities and highlighting our additional funded environmental projects along the route. You can view relevant Community and Environment Fund (CEF) and Business and Local Economy Fund (BLEF) projects, the Woodland Fund, other local panel funds, and our environmental works in your area.

The Green Corridor Prospectus accompanies the map, outlining how the Green Corridor and associated funding can benefit communities. Used together, these tools will enable community and environment groups to identify local opportunities to enhance and enjoy the natural environment using the funds available.

Funding is available for a wide range of independent environmental projects to benefit nature and communities along the route , including creating new parks and play facilities, investing in green spaces in urban areas, regenerating areas along canals, and conserving and enhancing the historic environment. By working in partnership with organisations and individuals, the Green Corridor will deliver a positive, long-term legacy for the natural and historic environment , and for people and communities across the country.

On Phase One and Phase 2a, the £7m HS2 Woodland Fund is helping local landowners create new native, broadleaf woodlands and restore existing ancient woodland sites. The first £1.25m has been allocated as part of a grant scheme managed on our behalf by the Forestry Commission, supporting 28 woodland projects that will deliver approximately 105 hectares of new woodland and restore a further 68 hectares of ancient woodland.

Update on the temporary diversion of the Kenilworth Greenway

This update on the temporary diversion of the Kenilworth Greenway – overseen by the Laing O’Rourke and Murphy (LM) enabling works joint venture on behalf of High Speed Two (HS2) – provides information on work due to take place in January and February 2021.

Traffic management update for temporary Greenway in Burton Green

LM has now lifted all road closures in Burton Green. There won’t be any traffic management on roads over the Christmas/New Year break from 19 December to 3 January, as LM won’t be at work during this period.

We’re expecting to need temporary traffic lights on Red Lane in January and potentially early February to create safe working zones while we finish the Red Lane crossing for the temporary Greenway.

We also need to finish a small amount of work on Hob Lane, for which we may need temporary traffic lights for a few days during off peak times in January.

To get the latest information about traffic management, visit the one.network website.

Junction lights, crossings and street lighting

The new streetlights in Burton Green are to be switched on once agreements have been finalised with electricity suppliers. The signals controlling the operation of the new junction, and the crossings over Hob and Red Lanes, are due to be switched on in late January or early February subject to consents and approvals from local authorities.

Preparing to open the temporary Greenway

LM is working as quickly and as safely as possible to finish the temporary Greenway and open it to the public. We will be installing fences and signs around the temporary Greenway, and a small amount of hoarding at specific locations next to properties in Burton Green.

We now expect to open the temporary Greenway in February, subject to consents and approvals. If we can, we’ll open some sections earlier than others to provide more walking and cycling options to local communities. In the meantime, LM will continue to monitor and maintain the interim paths we’ve set up to help people move around the closed section of the existing Kenilworth Greenway.

First images released of Long Itchington Wood Tunnel site in Warwickshire

The first images of one of our largest construction sites in the Midlands have been revealed, showing preparations being made for the launch of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) that will dig under Long Itchington Wood in Warwickshire, creating a 1 mile twin bore tunnel, before the route heads north and into Birmingham's Curzon Street Station.

Current works on the 1km square north portal site include a large and deep excavation, with 250,000m3 of material being removed in layers before being transported and deposited locally to form environmental embankments for the main line. The 2,000 tonne TBM, manufactured in Germany by Herrenknecht, is due for delivery on site early in 2021 and will be launched next summer, with the boring completed by mid-2022.

The tunnel will be around 9-10 metres in diameter, with the TBM taking around five months to complete the first bore of the twin bore tunnel. Once completed, the TBM will be extracted at the South Portal and transported by road back to the North Portal to commence the second bore.

This key site is managed by the BBV Joint Venture (Balfour Beatty Group and VINCI Construction), who will be one of the biggest recruiters in the Midlands over the next two years, expecting to recruit 7,000 jobs to support the delivery of Britain's new high speed railway. There are currently 60 workers on site including student engineers and apprentices.

There are already 25 new apprentices from Warwickshire working with us and our supply chain, representing 7% of total new apprenticeships. We have also been working with stakeholders in Warwickshire to develop our Job Brokerage Model, due for launch in 2021. A major part of this is a new Job Brokerage Platform developed to showcase the vacancies being created by the delivery of Phase One of HS2.

Across Warwickshire, 82 businesses are supporting the delivery of the project, over 80% of which are SMEs, from sectors including construction training, builders’ merchants, forestry, electrical suppliers and labour providers. We are actively promoting supply chain opportunities to businesses in Warwickshire through partners that include Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, Coventry and Warwickshire LEP (Growth Hub), West Midlands FSB and Kenilworth Chamber.

There are 100 bridges, 35 viaducts, 36 cuttings and 70 bridge structures on this part of the route and BBV are also building the Bromford Tunnel. Works on a Green Tunnel located south of the Long Itchington Wood south portal will also begin later this year.

At the peak of construction on the whole of Phase One, ten tunnel boring machines - each a self-contained underground factory - will work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Weighing up to 2,200 tonnes, each 160m long machine will bore and line the tunnels as they drive forward at speeds of up to 15 metres per day.

HS2 Notification: Temporary weekend part-closure of sections of the A452 Chester Road (northbound) and A446 Stonebridge Road (northbound and southbound), and road reinstatement in Solihull

To ensure that the local road network is fit for purpose when the future HS2 Interchange Station is operational, we are remodelling and improving the existing network and creating new routes on HS2 land.

To link the new network with existing routes, we’re building four connecting highways bridges. The first was successfully installed across the M42 in August. To safely install the next bridge deck over the A446, parts of the A452 Chester Road and A446 Stonebridge Road will be closed this weekend.

Sections of the A452 Chester Road (northbound) and A446 Stonebridge Road (northbound and southbound) between Stonebridge Island and M6 Junction 4 will be closed to traffic after evening rush hour on Friday 23 October 2020, and reopen before morning rush hour on Monday 26 October 2020. If work progresses faster than expected, we will reopen the A452 and A446 earlier if possible.

During the temporary closure, diversions will be in place and clear signage will be displayed for drivers. Please visit the Highways England website for full details or view the works notification , including a map.

After this second bridge is installed over the A446, we will also need to carry out various activities to reinstate the road. To conduct these safely, we will install a 24-hour single lane closure and then a road closure. Firstly, we'll install a temporary 24-hour single lane closure along the A446 southbound from Monday 26 October for approximately five days. If the bridge over the A446 is completed ahead of schedule and the A452 and A446 are reopened before Monday 26 October, we will install the 24-hour single lane closure from that point.

To complete our activities to reinstate the road, when we remove the 24-hour single lane closure, we will install a temporary road closure along the A446 southbound from Friday 30 October for one night. Please view the works notification , including maps.

Burton Green update on installation of crossings.

Works to install crossing points on Red Lane and Hob Lane in Burton Green are continuing.

Following recent engagement with the local authorities, local schools and the community, we have increased our team working to seven days. This has meant that we can reduce the impact of the full road closures on Hob Lane, Cromwell Lane and Red Lane by around six weeks.

Our programme will still see the works finishing towards the end of the year but in a few weeks' time, we can start to change our traffic management to allow more access through the village.

From 9th October pedestrian access will be reintroduced between Hob Lane and Cromwell Lane for a two week period to allow better access to the school.

During half term week (23 October to 31 October) we will close the pedestrian access to help progress the works.

To coincide with schools returning in November, we will put in place temporary traffic lights along Hob Lane and Cromwell Lane to allow vehicle access to the school.

The works may need a further short full closure towards the end of November, but we will notify in advance if this is necessary.

Red Lane will remain closed for the duration of the works. Access to properties will be maintained.

These timeframes are subject to change as works progress but we will keep the HS2 in Warwickshire website (hs2inwarwickshire.co.uk) and the local community up to date with the works.

Whilst reviewing the programme and methods of work, our contractors have continued to look at retaining the oak tree during the installation of the crossings.

HS2 Notification: Highways works in the Interchange area from 12th October 2020

Utility surveys on the A45 service road and East Way from 12th to 15th of October 2020

Main works for HS2 are being carried out by Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV).

In July 2020, we notified local communities about the start of BBV’s work within the Interchange station area. Continuing with these works, BBV will be completing ground investigation surveys within side verges of the A45 service road and East Way from the 12th to the 15th of October. These surveys help us identify what utilities are within the area.

In order to work safely, BBV will be implementing temporary night-time road closures to the A45 service road and East Way. The temporary closures will be in place from 9:00pm – 5:00am. Road signage will be in place to highlight the diversion routes.

For more information, including a map showing the extents of the night-time and closure and the diversion routes, please see our notification .

24-hour temporary traffic lights on a short section of the A452 from 12 October 2020 for four weeks

During 2020, our early works contractor, LM, are improving and expanding sections of the existing road network in the area, and constructing new routes on HS2 land, which will connect to four new highway bridges. These road improvements will ensure that when the future HS2 Interchange Station is operational, the local road network is fit for purpose.

This is an ongoing programme of works, which commenced in March on Northway and the B4438 .

From Monday 12 October, we will operate 24-hour temporary traffic lights on a short section of the A452. An accompanying single lane closure will be installed along this stretch of road, which will alternate between northbound and southbound. These traffic measures will be in place for four weeks, but if our work progresses faster than expected, we will reopen this section of the A452 earlier if possible.

You will still be able to travel along this section of the A452 and we will ensure clear signage is in place for drivers.

The map below outlines the location of the temporary traffic lights and accompanying single lane closure in orange.

This schedule is subject to change depending on site and weather conditions. We’ll keep you informed of any adjustments at: www.hs2inwarwickshire.co.uk

Join our free online ecology event - habitats and wetlands in the West Midlands

HS2’s landscape and ecology programme in the West Midlands will create bigger, better and more joined up wildlife habitats, including woodland, wetlands, and community spaces around the new railway for people to enjoy for years to come.

We would like to invite you to find out more by attending our free 'HS2 in Focus' webinar on ecology on September 30, where we will be discussing our plans for habitats and wetlands in the region and highlighting what has already been created.

Our enabling works contractor LMJV (Laing O’Rourke and Murphy Joint Venture) and their team of ecologists and landscape architects have planted nearly 80,000 trees already in the West Midlands and Warwickshire. In addition, 40 ponds and several acres of wetland, heathland and meadow have also been created, with new wildlife habitats in a variety of locations including badger setts, bat houses, bird boxes, reptile banks and bug houses to help local wildlife populations thrive.

The new woodlands will be part of our ‘Green Corridor’ which will see up to 7 million new trees and shrubs planted between London and the West Midlands, supporting delicately balanced local ecosystems running through the spine of the country.

Our environmental experts, as well as those from LMJV and Five Rivers Environmental Contracting, will be discussing the works that are taking place before we build Britain’s new high-speed railway. The session will also highlight the efforts we are making to ensure that we carefully manage our impact on the existing natural environment during the construction and operation of the new railway.

Update on Kenilworth Greenway and work in Burton Green

We recently published information about upcoming work for the Kenilworth Greenway between Berkswell and Burton Green. We received feedback from local communities about the impacts of road closures at the junction of Hob Lane, Cromwell Lane and Red Lane in Burton Green needed to finish building the temporary diversion of the Greenway.

We along with our early works contractor, the Laing O’Rourke and Murphy (LM) joint venture, are always mindful of the potential impacts of the railway and associated Greenway works on Burton Green, having engaged with council and community representatives over the past three years to incorporate local feedback in the design of the temporary Greenway. In recent months – and particularly this week – we’ve engaged with directly-affected residents, businesses, councils and community representatives to fully understand local needs and requests for road access and commuting. We appreciate the time and effort people have given to provide us with feedback and share their local knowledge.

We are proceeding with road closures at the junction from Monday 24 August as outlined in this notice , as we will be working in the middle of roads and under roads for a number of weeks from 24 August. Over the coming weeks, we’ll work closely with affected stakeholders and community representatives to update them on our progress as we build the temporary Greenway as quickly and as safely as possible. This will include reviewing opportunities to potentially switch to other forms of traffic management later this year. We are also looking into working extended shifts – possibly working 7 days a week – in Burton Green to try and reduce the overall amount of time needed to build the temporary Greenway. These options are subject to approvals, consents, site conditions, and new ways of working amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

We also received feedback about keeping a tree on Hob Lane, Burton Green, that is due to be removed to build a temporary Greenway crossing point. Road standards, and health and safety standards, mean we have to remove the tree to build the temporary Greenway and redevelop the junction of Hob, Cromwell and Red Lanes. The constraints at this location mean that we anticipate the tree needs to be removed under all feasible design options to meet the standards. However, we are finalising a number of surveys to confirm this position and will communicate the outcome as soon as we can.

We encourage local communities to keep an eye on the latest news section of the HS2 in Warwickshire website, and sign up to receive news alerts on upcoming work by email. We’ll be holding regular reviews of our work in Burton Green, and we’ll communicate any potential changes to communities through this website and posting notices to directly-affected residents.

M42 reopened ahead of schedule as new HS2 bridge installed in just two days

To ensure that the local road network is fit for purpose when the future HS2 Interchange Station is operational, HS2 contractors are expanding and improving the existing network and creating new routes on HS2 land.

On Friday 7 August 2020, junctions 6 and 7A (northbound) and junctions 7 and 6 (southbound) of the M42 were closed to traffic. This closure enabled early works contractor, LM, to safely install a 65 metre bridge over the motorway.

We’re pleased to inform you that the closure of the M42 has been lifted and road users can now travel in both directions. Work to install the 2,750 tonne, 65 metre long bridge, which spans the width of the M42, was completed in just two days and the motorway reopened to road users earlier than planned.

A 448-wheel transporter took just one hour and 45 minutes to move the bridge span 150 metres, where it was affixed to a composite concrete deck to complete the overall bridge structure. Traditional construction methods would have required several weeks of lane closures on both carriageways, followed by additional weekend and overnight closures.

The successful installation marks the completion of the first of four bridges to be built close to the new Interchange Station. It will form part of the major remodelling of the existing road network to improve the circulation of traffic around the HS2 railway line and the new Interchange Station.

We would like to thank you for your patience during this time.

Visit the HS2 website to find out more about the M42 bridge installation .

Notice of archaeology works from July alongside the Kenilworth Road

Before we begin to build the new railway and the Interchange Station, the surrounding area will become part of the largest archaeology programme ever undertaken in the UK. Across the HS2 route, more than 1,000 archaeologists, scientists and conservators are revealing the everyday lives of the people and their communities from the last 10,000 years.

For more information about what we have uncovered so far, visit HS2 archaeology .

Throughout the year, we will be holding online archaeology events to share details of the exciting finds from across the line of route. Subscribe to this website to receive email alerts about our upcoming events, including how to register for tickets.

From Monday 6 July, we’ll begin digging trenches alongside the Kenilworth Road on HS2 land. We aim to conclude our trenching in this area on Friday 24 July, but if our archaeology team find anything of interest, our works may be extended. To safely carry out these works, from Monday 13 July to Friday 17 July, we’ll close a lay-by adjacent to our trenching site alongside the Kenilworth Road.

Our working hours will be 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, but our contractors may be on site up to an hour before and after those times.

We’ll dig a number of trenches per day, and explore each for a few days, before filling them back in if nothing is discovered. We’ll work in one specific area at a time in the area highlighted on the map below.

If you have a question about HS2 or our works, please contact our HS2 Helpdesk team on 08081 434 434 or email hs2enquiries@hs2.org.uk .

One week left to cast your vote to help us name the first two HS2 Tunnel Boring Machines

Pupils at Meadow High School in Hillingdon have suggested a name for one of the first of 10 giant tunnel boring machines (TBMs) which has been shortlisted for a national vote launched by HS2 Ltd. The TBMs will excavate more than 35 miles of tunnel on the first phase the UK’s new high speed railway between London and the West Midlands.

The public is being invited to go to https://www.hs2.org.uk/tbmvoting/ and vote for their favourite name, from a shortlist of three chosen by local school children and inspired by female scientific and medical pioneers.

    The names are:

  • Cecilia – named after Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, the Astronomer and Astrophysicist born in Buckinghamshire who became Chair of Astronomy at Harvard University in the United States. Suggested by students at Chalfont Community College in Buckinghamshire.
  • Florence – named after Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, who spent many years in Claydon, Buckinghamshire where she wrote numerous books on nursing. Suggested by students at The Meadow High School in Hillingdon.
  • Marie – named after Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and the first person and the only woman to win the Nobel Prize twice. Suggested by students at Maple Cross JMI and Nursery in Hertfordshire.
  • The name with the most votes will be given to the first TBM, due to be launched from a site close to the M25 early next year. The enormous, 2,000 tonne, 170m long machine will be one of two that will dig the 10 mile long Chiltern tunnels.

The second machine, due to be launched a month later, will be given the second most popular name in the public vote.

The TBMs will be operated by HS2’s main works contractor, Align JV – a joint venture formed of three companies: Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine, and VolkerFitzpatrick.

The machines are being built by Herrenknecht in Germany. Their names are being chosen now so they can be fixed to machines during their manufacture, ready for when they emerge out of the factory.

After completion the first two machines will be disassembled before beginning their long journey to England. Once they have arrived on site, each TBM will be reassembled, ready to begin their life underground.

Together the TBMs will spend around three years digging what will be the longest and deepest tunnels on the project, stretching from just inside the M25, to South Heath in Buckinghamshire.

Since May 2019, Cadent has been working to move an existing pipeline near Church Lane, north east of Middleton, to facilitate HS2’s construction and to continue to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply.

We have now finished moving the pipe and have successfully carried out routine testing on the relocated pipeline. We’re currently reinstating our working area and site access to replace topsoil and vegetation that we had to remove to carry out the diversion. The compound and car park area will remain in place as it will be used by other HS2 works in the future.

Nineteen Warwickshire projects share over £940,000 as the total number supported along the HS2 route reaches 100

The number of community and business groups to receive awards from the HS2 community and business funds has topped over 100 with Warwickshire receiving nineteen awards to date totalling £943,525. The Community and Environment Fund (CEF) and the Business and Local Economy Fund (BLEF) for Phase One, between London and the West Midlands, make a combined total of £40 million available to local communities and businesses disrupted by the construction of HS2

Amongst Warwickshire's nineteen awarded projects is the relocation and development of Coleshill Community hub. The £75,000 funding was used to relocate the previous hub and employ a part time coordinator to run the new facility. The project aims to improve the lives of people in and around the Coleshill area by providing services to combat social isolation and issues related to their semi-rural location.

Victory Hall in Bodymoor Heath, North Warwickshire and ‘Kenilworth is Open for Business’ run by Kenilworth Town Council were amongst the other projects. Harbury pre-school received funding to modernise their facilities, and “Keeping e-wheels rolling”, a community transport service which provides electric vehicles for elderly people and young families to transport them to hospital, doctors and dentist appointments and social events, run by Harbury e-wheels, was also supported.

As we work through the COVID-19 pandemic, the approval for the next stage of the project has meant that our contractors now have the go ahead to start building the new railway whilst remaining within the Public Health England (PHE) and industry guidelines. As part of our commitment to being a good neighbour, we realise that communities are affected by the construction of HS2, and the community and business funds are key to help offset the disruption caused.

As construction of HS2 gets underway, applications for the funds are still being welcomed. The Funds for Phase One, administered by community charity Groundwork UK, support urban and rural, community, environmental and business projects. Community and Business groups along the HS2 route between London and the West Midlands have been able to apply for funds since March 2017.

A map of all awarded projects is available here . Some of the awards in Warwickshire include:

  • £75,000 for the relocation and development of the Coleshill Community Hub, run by Coleshill Town Council
  • £75,000 for Victory Hall in Bodymoor Heath, in North Warwickshire
  • £10,000 for “Keeping e-wheels rolling”, a community transport service which provides electric vehicles for elderly people and young families to transport them to hospital, doctors and dentist appointments and social events, run by Harbury e-wheels
  • £10,000 for Harbury pre-school to modernise their facilities
  • £74,5000 for Kenilworth is Open for Business run by Kenilworth Town Council.
  • The independent administration of these funds is managed on behalf of HS2 Ltd by the charity Groundwork who will ensure both funds remain available for applications throughout the construction of Phase One. Read the Groundwork annual review.

Community and business groups interested in applying for the fund can find out more at www.hs2funds.org.uk

Information about HS2 Ltd during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic

The health, safety and wellbeing of the communities along the route of the new railway, and our staff, remains our absolute priority.

    Construction sites

We are working closely with our construction partners to review the works on our construction sites in line with Government and Public Health England (PHE) advice on dealing with COVID-19. The Government’s current COVID-19 strategy makes clear that construction activity can continue as long as it complies with this guidance.

Along the overall Phase One route, between London and the West Midlands, work at some of our sites has been paused as we complete this review. Some staff may be present to make the safety assessments and to ensure the sites remain safe and secure. Those sites that are still working are doing so because they can operate within PHE and construction industry guidelines, and will be monitored and remain under constant review.

We do expect that work will restart at some of these sites where our contractors are confident that they can operate in line with PHE and industry guidance, protecting our staff and the communities in which they are working.

    Community engagement

We have taken the decision to postpone all face-to-face engagement events and meetings during this period. We have been notifying local residents and putting in place alternative ways of communicating and engaging with communities over the coming weeks and months.

    HS2 Helpdesk

The HS2 Helpdesk remains operational all day, every day, and will be the public’s first point of contact should they need advice or information from HS2. You can contact the Helpdesk:

Update on our Autumn/Winter work in Warwickshire

Over the coming months, you may see Laing O’Rourke and J. Murphy & Sons (LM) staff and subcontractors on HS2 sites near you, continuing with our early works for the railway. We want to give you a sense of what we will and won’t be doing in this period.

    Ancient woodland sites

As HS2 confirmed in this statement , we have instructed our contractors to hold off clearance of ancient woodlands required for the construction of the railway during the period of the Oakervee review. For more information, please see HS2’s statement: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/hs2-ltds-approach-to-ancient-woodlands-during-the-oakervee-review

However, it will be necessary for HS2 Ltd to undertake certain essential works to enable removal of potential refuge habitat for Great Crested Newts and the closure of badger setts, it may be necessary to first clear discrete areas of scrub and ruderal vegetation.

In addition, certain mitigation measures for the protection of bats will be required, in order to avoid the risk of bats roosting in trees that will be the subject of Clearance Works, in the event that such works resume from January 2020. This work will also need to take place this autumn, ahead of hibernation.

The work will include blocking up holes in trees to stop bats from roosting, as well as potentially removing some selected branches, for the same purpose. However, HS2 Ltd will not remove branches from any ‘ancient’ or ‘veteran’ trees within any ancient woodland This work is required to meet legal requirements and will be undertaken in accordance with the terms of the necessary bat licences granted by Natural England.

    Other activities

We will be continuing with other clearance activities this Winter. This includes clearing shrubs, hedgerows and woodland in non-ancient sites, as well as habitat creation.

Our general clearance work in Warwickshire will begin in mid-October 2019 near Welsh Road, setting up a compound in that location. Our clearance teams will then progress north along the future route of HS2.

This work needs to continue in order to ensure that main construction work for HS2 can commence on time in future. It is also important to complete this work during this time of year, as it is outside of key periods in the ecological calendar such as bird nesting season – minimising our impact on local wildlife.

For more information about our work in your area, come along to one of HS2’s drop-in events at the following locations:

  • Stoneleigh Village Hall – 2.00pm to 4.00pm on Tuesday 8 October
  • Weston-Under-Wetherley Village Hall – 6.00pm to 8.00pm on Tuesday 8 October
  • Balsall Common Library – 2.00pm to 4.00pm on Tuesday 15 October
  • The Kenilworth Centre – 6.00pm to 8.00pm on Tuesday 15 October

Our enabling works contractor, the Laing O’Rourke and Murphy (LM) joint venture recently published an Autumn/Winter Newsletter to provide more information about early works in Warwickshire, outlining our activities from October 2019 to March 2020 to ensure main construction work can start on time.

Included in the newsletter was an update about how some of our work activity would affect limited areas of ancient woodlands. We have assessed 11 ancient woodlands, parts of which were due to be affected by preparations to build Britain’s new high speed railway this autumn, during the period of the Oakervee review . Work will now be deferred to Autumn or Winter 2020 on 5 of these sites, and to early 2020 on 6 of the sites. We will also take measures to protect wildlife to ensure they are not affected when work begins in early 2020.

The work affecting 11 ancient woodlands will be deferred as follows:

Five sites to be deferred to Autumn / Winter 2020

  • Roughknowles Wood
  • North Wood
  • Un-named copse off Drayton Lane
  • Rookery Wood
  • Burnt Firs
  • Six sites to be deferred to early 2020

  • Fulfen Wood
  • Broadwells Wood
  • Birches Wood
  • Crackley Wood
  • Unnamed Woodland south of Ashow Road
  • South Cubbington Wood
  • Other essential preparatory works will continue during this period including general vegetation clearance, fencing, preparation of site compounds, and ground investigations. We are continuing to assess and monitor this programme of work and any related impacts on ancient woodlands. Should that ongoing assessment result in any changes to our position, we will inform you as soon as possible.

We are also delivering an extensive community engagement programme to ensure that local people are kept up-to-date with any works in their area.

HS2 Works: An update on our works in Warwickshire

    Burton Green to Kenilworth

Our enabling works contractor, the Laing O’Rourke and Murphy (LM) joint venture, is setting up work sites between Burton Green and Kenilworth and getting ready to build a temporary road dedicated to HS2 construction traffic (known as a ‘haul road’) along the route of HS2.

LM has published an Autumn/Winter Newsletter to provide more information about early works in Warwickshire, outlining our activities from October 2019 to March 2020 to ensure main construction work can start on time.

In addition, some of the things you might experience in areas between Burton Green and Kenilworth in coming weeks include:

  • Tree and vegetation clearance, and temporary traffic lights, on a small section of the A429 Coventry Road/Kenilworth Road at Crackley as explained in this notice A429 Works .
  • A temporary closure of Cryfield Grange Road in Crackley while we create access points, as explained in this notice Cryfield Grange Road
  • Temporary traffic management on Bockendon Road Notification and Waste Lane Notification of closure starting in late September to support construction of the haul road between Burton Green and Kenilworth.
  • LM will also be at work in small sections of Crackley Wood, Birches Wood, Diamond Wood and Rough Knowles Wood off Crackley Lane/Cryfield Grange Road, and at Broadwells Wood near Burton Green. This will involve clearly-signed temporary closures of the public rights of way and bridleways through these woods from late September to December, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, to ensure the safety of people moving around our work sites at these locations. We will lift these temporary closures as soon as possible.

    Cubbington to Offchurch

LM is overseeing a work site at Cubbington Wood off the B4453 Rugby Road. At this location, we are:

  • Setting up a compound to support future construction work
  • Archaeological investigations
  • Planting new woodlands and creating new wildlife habitats, as part of a future ‘green corridor’ alongside HS2
  • Cutting back small amounts of hedgerows and vegetation and preparing to clear the minimum number of trees required to safely build the railway.
  • Our work at Cubbington Wood will involve a clearly-signed temporary closure of the public right of way near the wood from late September to December, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, to ensure the safety of people moving around our work site. We will lift the temporary closure as soon as possible.

LM has published an Autumn/Winter Newsletter to provide more information about early works in Warwickshire, outlining our activities from October 2019 to March 2020 to ensure main construction work can start on time.

In Offchurch, LM will temporarily close a section of Long Itchington Road/National Cycle Route 41 temporary road close from late September to continue preparations for our work site and compound off the B4455 Fosse Way. A diversion will be in place along Welsh Road and the Fosse Way. The temporary closure will be in place 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, and we will lift it from the road as soon as possible.

There will also be traffic lights in place on Welsh Road to support the creation of an access point Welsh Road .

Temporary road closures are continuing in the area between Offchurch and Southam Phase 4 to prepare for future tunnel boring machine work. The current temporary closure of a section of Welsh Road between the Bascote Road junction and the Grand Union Canal Bridge is expected to continue until late November 2019.

Our Community Engagement Strategy outlines all the ways that we’ll engage with people and communities that are affected along the route.

It sets out how we‘ll engage with communities in Warwickshire to ensure that we meet our commitments and continue to be a good neighbour. This is particularly important in 2019 as we begin our main construction work.

    This plan:

  • introduces you to your local Community Engagement team and partners working on our behalf;
  • provides maps showing where our key works are in your area;
  • informs you about the different ways you can contact us; and
  • explains how we’ll measure how well we’re doing against our 10 Community Commitments.

    HS2 utility works in Warwickshire

Initial work on HS2 is underway at sites across Warwickshire. This includes the diversion of existing utilities, such as underground gas pipes and overhead power cables. This work is preparing the way for our main construction work in the future.

It is an essential part of delivering HS2 and we would like to share some details with you about how this has been going.

Here are some of the highlights in Warwickshire:

    Offchurch:

National Grid Gas has successfully diverted a gas main in Offchurch. The 610m diversion runs under the route of the railway and will enable our main works contractors to safely build across the pipeline into a deep excavation. One of the most complex activities included lifting 110m of the new heavy steel pipe. The total weight of this complex lift was over 35 tonnes.

    Chattle Hill:

There are several significant utility diversions near to each other, including high voltage overhead power cables, high-pressure gas mains and fuel pipelines, as well as sewer and water main pipes. Cadent Gas is currently constructing a compound at Chattle Hill, which is the main compound for the construction of five gas pipeline diversions taking place near Coleshill in 2019 and 2020.

    Coleshill:

We’ve previously notified you about the demolition of the Auria building being carried out by LM and since then there has been significant progress with the demolition works. This was an extension built onto the main building and was a large open warehouse space. These works are critical to enable future utilities diversions and the construction of the main HS2 line.

During all of these utilities works, as well as our overall construction programme, we’re committed to being a good neighbour to local communities. This includes keeping local people informed about what we are doing, when we’re doing it, and how we’re minimising the impact on their area. We’ll continue to keep anyone affected by our work up-to-date and we are able to answer any questions or concerns, through our 24/7 helpline.

  • London Borough of Camden Council which is investing £75,000 of CEF Local funding into an outreach project to engage and create ‘The Euston Well-Being Team’ to support the local street population and help to reduce local crime and antisocial behaviour that is currently being experienced in the area.
  • Community groups and business support organisations are being encouraged to apply to the Funds for projects that have a demonstrable positive impact on their local community.

A combined total of £40 million has been made available for both the CEF and BLEF projects for Phase One of the construction of HS2. The Funds will provide support for good quality bids and funding will be available throughout this time period. CEF and BLEF have supported 62 projects since March 2017 from small scale grassroots projects to large scale capital projects which benefit a wide range of communities.

Celebrating a year of Playing it Safe - Safety workshops for Phase One Primary schools

We recognise that there are many schools in close proximity to our planned works and it is important for us to ensure that children understand the dangers that construction sites can pose. We have a duty to engage directly with local schools to communicate and reinforce the importance of staying safe when living and playing near construction sites.

We appointed Arc Theatre to deliver Playing it Safe , an interactive health and safety workshop designed for primary schools along the Phase One route of HS2. The workshop uses drama to communicate the dangers present on construction sites and the surrounding areas, as well as the consequences of trespassing on those sites.

Playing it Safe has now taken place at more than 50 schools, teaching over 4000 pupils how to stay safe when living near construction sites.

The workshop is available to Years 5 and 6 with audiences of between 30 and 90 pupils, with each session lasting between 60-75 minutes. Arc can deliver up to two sessions in one school per day.

The workshop is completely free of charge, but limited and offered to schools closest to the route. If you would like your local primary school to take part in this workshop please ask them to contact Nita@arctheatre.com or call 020 8595 8509 .

Safety workshops for Phase One Primary Schools

Health and safety is a top priority for the successful delivery of HS2 Ltd.

We recognise that there are many schools in close proximity to our planned works and it is important for us to ensure that children understand the dangers that construction sites can pose. We have a duty to engage directly with local schools to communicate and reinforce the importance of staying safe when living and playing near construction sites.

We have appointed Arc Theatre to deliver Playing it Safe , an interactive health and safety workshop designed for primary schools along the Phase One route of HS2. The workshop uses drama to communicate the dangers present on construction sites and the surrounding areas, as well as the consequences of trespassing on those sites.

The workshop is available to Years 5 and 6 with audiences of between 30 and 90 pupils, with each session lasting between 60-75 minutes. Arc can deliver up to two sessions in one school per day.

The workshop is completely free of charge, but limited and offered to schools closest to the route. If you would like your local school to take part in this workshop please ask them to contact Nita@arctheatre.com or call 020 8595 8509 .

Local residents visit HS2 works at Crackley Gap – May 2018

A group of Kenilworth residents are briefed during a site visit to HS2 enabling works at Crackley Gap. Initial work is now complete in the area.

Residents of Kenilworth in Warwickshire have taken the opportunity to visit the latest HS2 works at Crackley Gap. They were concerned that sections of hedgerow and some trees were being removed during the bird nesting season that runs from March to August. They donned protective clothing to see the work for themselves - and to be briefed on the steps that are taken to ensure that no nesting birds are disturbed during the enabling works.

All wild bird species, their nests and their young, are protected throughout England and Wales by the Wildlife & Countryside Act. This act makes it illegal to kill, injure or take any wild bird, or damage or destroy the nest or eggs of breeding birds.

However, the removal of trees, hedgerows and the clearance of vegetation is permitted so long as strict procedures are followed, supervised by a full time Ecological Officer in compliance with a working method statement.

The Ecological Officer carries out checks on the ground, in hedges and in trees prior to any vegetation clearance work being carried out. If nesting birds are found, any works that may damage or destroy the nest, eggs or young birds, are immediately stopped. An exclusion zone is then put around the nests and this remains in place until the birds have completed breeding, the young have fledged, and the Ecology Officer has checked the nest. Only at that point is work allowed to continue.

    > Enabling - or early – works are being carried out by LM, a joint venture between Laing O’Rourke and J. Murphy & Sons, to prepare the route in advance of the main construction works.
